Mississippi Census Indexes, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1870:

Indexes contain alphabetical listing of names with county and page number of                          census microfilm (1850 gives the family number).  The 1880 census index is available on CD for all states.  Actual census records are on microfilm and are located in the Buckley Room. Records of Land Patents, Lowndes County, Mississippi: Records (1820-1842) of all lands lying in the county of Lowndes, in the NE land district, MS, and sold at the land office in Columbus, 1839, and the land office in Pontotoc, MS, 1842, with the date of approval of sale.  Original book is located in the Archives. Lowndes County, Mississippi Marriages 1820-1922: Alphabetical listing by name of groom and by name of bride. Gives date of marriage and book and page number of actual record books which are located at the Lowndes County Courthouse. CL976.209 LOWNDES/LOG

City of Columbus Mayors, Selectmen, Aldermen, Councilmen 1831-1977: Excerpts from City Council Minutes Books that relate to Mayors, Selectmen, Aldermen, Councilmen.  Contains three lists (1) Mayors listed by term, (2) Mayors and Selectmen/Alderman/Councilmen listed by term, (3) Mayors and Selectmen present at meetings recorded in Minute Book I, listed by date of meeting.  Original minute books through 1965 are located in the Archives. Index to Will Books I & II: Index for Will Book I & II which are located in the Chancery Clerk’s Office in the Lowndes County Courthouse.  Index for Will Book I is in alphabetical order by names of testators, executors, administrators, heirs, witnesses to the will, and properly transferred slaves.  Corresponding page numbers to Will Book I are provided.  Index to Will Book II is in alphabetical order by names of testators only with corresponding page numbers provided. Will Abstracts Lowndes County 1830-1866: Abstracts of Lowndes County Wills from l830 to 1866.  Appears under name of testator and arranged in the order in which they appear in Probate records.  Lists page number of will in Probate records, date written, heirs, executors, witnesses, and date recorded.  Index of all names provided.  Wills are located at the Lowndes County Courthouse. Tax Records of Lowndes County, MS 1833-1840: Index to early tax rolls of Lowndes County, which include residents paying poll taxes and property taxes.  Arranged in alphabetical order according to taxpayer’s last name.  Includes the years they are listed, the amount of acres they paid taxes on, and idea of where their land was located.  These records are on microfilm and are located in the Buckley Room. Columbus City Directories: Lists businesses and individuals along with their spouse and occupation.  The hardbound directories cover the following years (additional years continue outside of your assigned date ranges): 1906, 1912, 1918, 1925, 1929, 1931, 1936, 1938, 1940, 1942, and 1947.  There is a microfilm roll of the City Directories spanning the years 1912-1931 (covering the same years on the shelf in addition to 1914, 1922-23, and 1928).  The microfilm is located in the Margaret L. Buckley Room in the microfilm cabinets (right cabinet-tenth drawer).  Several photocopied city directories from Columbus newspapers cover the years 1880, 1883, 1885, 1886, and 1891.  They are located in the Billups-Garth Archives Room in the Map Flat Files in drawer eleven.

 

Lowndes County Land Roll 1846-1847: Land roll, Part B, for East side of Tombigbee River. (Part A is missing.) Gives owner’s name, section, township, range, and number of acres.  Index is provided.  CL976.209 LOWNDS/LOG

 

Lowndes County Land Tax Roll 1855: Transcribed from the original 1855 Land Tax Roll for Lowndes County.  Gives owner’s name, section, township, range, number of acres and value with index is provided.  Original land tax roll is located in the Archives. CL976.209 LOWNDES/NEA

 

Lowndes County, Mississippi Ancestral Homesteads: Contains records from the General Land Office Records Project, U.S. Dept of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, Eastern States.  Information is listed by name of landowner and gives a description of land, section, acres, sign date, doc. #, township, + and range.  Index is provided. Mississippi Report From the Commissioners of the General Land Office: Records provide name of original purchaser, name of assignee, quantity purchased, and price.  Index is provided.  CL976.209 LOWNDES/US (See also CL976.209LOWNDES/COL)

 

Index to Probate Court Files: [Two separate books] Alphabetical listing of persons named in the Probate files with case number provided.  These files contain estate, guardianship, apprenticeship, and orphans records as well as names of slaves.  Actual records are located in the Archives. Index to Chancery Court Cases: [Two separate books] Alphabetical listing of persons named in Chancery Court cases (General Docket) with case number provided.  These files contain records of court cases pertaining to disputes, divorces, deeds, and ex parte (land sale, name change, petitions, etc.).  Actual records are located in the Archives.  Part of these records have been microfilmed and are located in the Buckley Room. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps: Created for evaluating fire insurance liability in urban areas of the United States.  The maps on Columbus cover the following years: 1885, 1890, 1895, 1900, 1905, 1910, 1926, and 1933.  The maps are on microfilm located in the Margaret L. Buckley Room microfilm cabinets (right cabinet-top drawer).

 

Black’s Law Dictionary:  Dictionary of legal terms listed in alphabetical order.  It is useful as a reference to terminology in various court records.  Ask Archivist for location.

 

Northeast Mississippi Historical & Genealogical Quarterly Vol. 1-22:  Publication of the Northeast Mississippi Historical & Genealogical Society containing various records for eleven Mississippi Counties (Alcorn, Benton, Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Prentiss, Pontotoc, Tippah, Tishomingo, & Union).  Each volume contains its own index.

 

Journal of Mississippi History Vol. 1-66 and Indexes:  Bound collection of the Journal of Mississippi History, which contains book reviews and articles on topics relevant to Mississippi history (important people, places, events).  Each volume contains a table of contents and an index of titles and authors.  The collection also consists of three bound indexes.  The first is an index to volumes 1 – 20.  The second is an index to volumes 21 – 40, and the third is a cumulative index of volumes 1 – 15.

 

Definitions:

 

Vertical File-Folders containing documents and materials collected and arranged for ready reference. (i.e. newspaper clippings, pamphlets, etc.)  Often arranged based on family name or by subject. (i.e. Brown Family or Columbus Movie Theaters)

 

Manuscript Collection-A collection of personal or family papers. (i.e. Sarah Cox Husband Papers)

 

Note: Collections MS 180 and MS 317 will NOT be accessible to Tales from the Crypt students until a date determined by the professor.  This collection consists of previous student’s research from Tales from the Crypt and Historic Blocks.
